Impact of Work to Date
Housing 4 Now has a history of improving the lives of countless immigrants. We have provided safe housing and supportive services to thousands of individuals and families. Helped clients secure employment and achieve financial independence. Connected immigrants with educational opportunities and facilitated their integration into American society.
Budget and Budget Narrative
This project requires a total budget of $20,000. This is the minimum amount for which we can safely transition 100 immigrants into society, and support essential program components:
Case Management Staff Salaries Direct Costs ($12,000): Personalized support to connect individuals with essential services and resources. Cost to operate this program can be kept low because, we work with various other immigration and social service agencies, such as the Social Security Administration, who can provide specific case management and integration services for each immigrant person or family in need.
Immigrant Eligibility and Qualifications for SSI: UNDER WHAT CIRCUMSTANCES MAY A NONCITIZEN BE ELIGIBLE FOR SSI INCOME?
In the Safe Haven Program, we start by assessing noncitizen immigrants (also called an "alien" for immigration purposes), who may be eligible for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) if he or she meets the requirements of the laws, under the “Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996.” Immigrant eligibility is also subject to the proper certification in such status by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and possession of a valid "T" non-immigrant visa. Once the noncitizen obtains proper certification and is in possession of a "T" non-immigrant visa, they become potentially eligible for SSI.
Department of Homeland Security (DHS): According to the DHS, an immigrant is a qualified alien if they are in one of the following categories:
Also, through the “Social Security Compassionate Allowances Program” (CAL), once an immigrant becomes a qualified alien, there are ways to quickly identify diseases and other medical conditions that, by definition, meet Social Security’s standards for disability benefits. These conditions primarily include certain cancers, adult brain disorders, and a number of rare disorders that affect children. The CAL initiative helps reduce waiting time to reach a disability determination for individuals with the most serious disabilities. By incorporating cutting-edge technology, our Safe Haven Program can easily identify potential CAL Immigrants for referral to expedited SSI programs and services.
Food & Supplies Direct Costs ($1,500) The Safe Haven Project will consider a combination of the following options to maximize the food budget for this program:
1. Partnerships with Local Food Banks: Benefits: Often, food banks offer significantly discounted or donated food to qualified organizations. Our established partnerships with local food banks, allows the Safe Haven project to stretch the budget further and provide a wider variety of food for clients.
2. Wholesale Food Distributors: Benefits: Housing 4 Now, is a licensed 501(c)(3) tax exempt nonprofit agency, which is able to buy from wholesale distributors, that typically offer lower prices than grocery stores, especially for bulk purchases.
3. Food Rescue Organizations: Benefits: Food rescue organizations collect surplus food from grocery stores, restaurants, and other sources and redistribute it to non-profit organizations like the Safe Haven Project. This will allow us to access fresh produce and other healthy food options at a discounted price or for free.
4. On Site Agriculture Farmland: Benefits: The Safe Haven Project has over 4 acres of vacant farmland that can be developed to produce Herbs, Vegetables, and Fruits, that will provide a regular supply of fresh, seasonal produce.
Educational Materials Direct Costs ($1,500) The Safe Haven Project will prioritize acquiring essential educational materials first.
Here are some options categorized by need:
1. English Language Learning (ESL): USA Learns provides online ESL courses, lesson plans, and resources for educators (https://www.usalearns.org/): Free and readily downloadable.
2. Literacy Network of America: Offers online resources for learners and educators, including ESL materials (https://www.literacynet.org/mi/home.html): Free with some paid resources available.
3. Life Skills and Vocational Training: Free Resources: Khan Academy: Provides online courses on a variety of topics, including life skills like budgeting, finance, and computer literacy, cultural Integration, (https://www.khanacademy.org/): Free and comprehensive.
4. edX and Coursera: Offer Massive Open Online Courses, on various topics relevant to job training and life skills. Many are free, while some require a paid subscription for certificates.
5. Inhouse Technology – Computer Training: At Safe Haven, we are able to provide free training regarding computer tablets and laptops. Individuals work and learn at their own pace. This class can also be used to access online learning platforms and educational resources.
Transportation Direct Costs ($2,000) For Transportation Costs, we will Focus on essential transportation needs only: Critical Transportation Needs: Transportation appointments to Doctor visits, legal aid meetings, immigration services, job interviews.
Budget Narrative Indirect Costs ($3,000): The $3,000 indirect costs would be for any unforeseen expenses. The operation of this project on a 10-acre off-grid farm eliminates many upfront expenses like rent and electricity. Our total budget request, of $20,000 for this project, would be to support essential programming.
The Safe Haven Project is a unique and impactful project that aligns perfectly with many immigration programs. By providing a safe haven and comprehensive support services, we can empower vulnerable immigrants to heal, thrive, and become contributing members of our community. We urge you to consider our proposal and join us in making a lasting difference in the lives of those who need it most.
Sincerely,
The Housing 4 Now Agency
